Retired after a career of more than 40 years in mass communications, Lange Winckler is a nationally-renowned journalist. In daily print journalism, Winckler reported for and edited the Barstow, CA, Desert Dispatch, the Pomona Progress-Bulletin, the Lodi (CA) News-Sentinel, The Tampa Tribune and its satellite journals, and newspapers in Virginia, Nebraska, Idaho and Kentucky. He contributed to the Associated Press and United Press International wire services, and wrote commentary for the Berlin, Germany, Morgenpost. Lange was a founding editor of ADWEEK Magazine, advised publishers nationwide about environmentally-friendly programs to make their journals more easily recycled and how to recycle waste in their publishing operations, and organized the California Resource Recovery Association. He taught in Mexico in a public service project sponsored by St. Paul's Catholic Church in San Francisco (the program was the basis for Whopee Goldberg's movie filmed at the same site, "Sister Act"). Winckler also worked at a machinery factory in West Berlin (during the period of post-war occupation by the five allies), and on the way back home in 1966, stopped for a weekend in Paris. He remembers little of that visit except that he stayed in the Georges V hotel, sang in the piano bar of the Jules Verne Restaurant in the Eiffel Tower, and woke up drunk the next morning with his head down on a cafe table in the Rue Montmartre. He lives, sober, in retirement in Lodi, California. Besides crafting daily epistles to newspapers nationwide, Winckler is drafting a novel about the disappearance of American aviatrix Amelia Earhart.
